Reading Requirements At Fruitport Middle School:
Students are expected to read every night for at least 20 minutes. They record their homework reading on Biblionasium. Our goal is for students to read lots of books, but we expect the average student to read at least 4 books per marking period at their level (16 each year) to be considered "On Target." Students will have a grade in the grade book to show their progress towards this goal.
When you start a book:
**Orders are placed about every fourth week. Students can also bring in the order form with a check made to Scholastic. Check the calendar for order dates!

- Read for 10 minutes and calculate your reading rate(Helpful Link on the Daily Agenda). Set a goal for when you will finish the book
- Add the book to your bookshelf" on Bookoplois.
- Read twenty minutes a night.
- Look for words that are unfamiliar to you. When you find one, jot it down on a “Found Words” bookmark or post-it. You will need to jot down the page number and what you feel it mean in the "context: of the sentence.
- “Talk back to the book” by jotting what you are thinking on a sticky note.
- Mark favorite passages
- Mark places where you are confused
- If you struggle to remember what you read, write a short summary at the end of the chapter.
- Write a review on Bookoplis. Your book review should be at least 4-5 sentences. Make sure to include 1) Title 2.) Author 3.) Rating and why, 4) the genre, 5.) brief summary without spoilers 6.) one of the themes of the book. (Example: I rate Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares 4.5 stars. It is a heart-warming realistic fiction novel that will have you laughing and crying as you follow Carmen, Tibby, Bridget & Lena as they each go their separate ways for the summer. This book teaches you that no one’s life is perfect, and we all have to try to be the best version we can of ourselves. One theme for this book is that life isn't perfect; enjoy what you were given.

- Volunteer to give a book talk about it to the class.
